Cricket World Cup Trivia 2


* West Indies won the inaugural World Cup
 Clive Lloyd captained the wining team

* Rohan Kanhai was a late replacement in the West Indian squad for the injured Garry Sobers

* Gary Gilmour took 6 for 14 and scored a vital 28 not out in the low-scoring Headingley semi-final

* Apart from Sri Lanka, East Africa non test playing team took part

* India’s 10-wicket win over East Africa in the 1975 World Cup was the first time when a side won a one-day international by that margin

* Jeff Crowe captained New Zealand in the 1987 World Cup. He had captained the Kiwis in only one Test before the tournament

* Inzamam-ul Haq Scored 60 off 37 balls against New Zealand in the semifinal of the 1992 edition, leading Pakistan to victory.


*Inzamam-ul Haq also has the dubious distinction of being run out the second highest number of times (Marvan Atapattu) in ODIs. He has been run-out 40 times in ODIs.

* Inzamam-ul Haq has three ODI wickets including that of Brian Lara’s (in 1991).

* At the first 4 World Cups, all players wore the traditional white uniform and red balls were used.

* The first three world cups were held in England .

* At the World Cup in 1996, Australia and West Indies refused to play their matches against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka due to security concerns, causing both matches to be awarded to Sri Lanka by default. Also, Sri Lanka were awarded a victory for their semi-final by default against India because of crowd riots. This aided their campaign which eventually led to them winning the final.


*The only person to have played both World Cup Football and World Cup Cricket is Viv Richards - Antigua at football and West Indies at cricket.
